Invitation to Submit Proposal / Sketches for Sculptures at the fifteen “Stone in the Galilee” International Sculpture Symposium – 2007
For the past 15 years, the Maalot-Tarshiha Municipality has organized an annual International Sculpture Symposium known as “Stone in the Galilee.”
This very special artistic event hosts sculptures from Israel and all over the world, which stay at Maalot-Tarshiha for three weeks and sculpt open-air exhibits and sculptures out of local Galilee stone on the site, which is attended by many visitors every year.
The Maalot-Tarshiha Municipality is currently preparing for its upcoming “Stone in the Galilee” Symposium which is planned for April 2007 and hereby invites sculptors from Israel and abroad to submit their proposals / sketches for sculptures to be executed at the Symposium. Please find attached the terms and conditions of participation. This year's chosen theme for the symposium will be: "From the World of Children's Fairytales". All the sculptors will be requested to prepare a sketch of a sculpture of a character from a famous children's fairytale.
The characters that can be submitted are: Snow-White, the Dwarfs from Snow-White, Little Red Riding Hood, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and Tiger, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, the Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan.
Three suggestions of three different characters should be handed in regular version and in dual-purpose version, for example: playground slide, bench etc….

Terms and Conditions of Application for Participation in the fifteen Annual “Stone in the Galilee” International Sculpture Symposium2006
Maalot-Tarshiha, Israel
I. General
1. The Seventeen Annual “Stone in the Galilee” International Sculpture Symposium will be held at Maalot-Tarshiha in April 2007.
2. Duration
Duration of sculptures’ stay in Maalot-Tarshiha – 22 days .
Estimated date of arrival to Maalot- 18/03/2007.
Estimated date of departure – April 08/04/2007 after evening the finale ceremony.
3. Total days of work- 18 (not including
Saturdays and holydays), please plan a
sculpture which its sculpting will not
longer than the period of time state
above .
II. Terms and Conditions for Submission of Application
Sculptures wishing to participate in the Symposium shall submit a formal application to the Municipality, containing the following information:
1. CV – in your CV please include previous participation in symposium, special exhibitions, etc. as well as date and place of birth, current address, telephone, and fax numbers, spoken language skills and e-mail.
Sculptors from Israel may submit CVs in Hebrew.
Applicants from abroad are requested to submit a CV in English.
2. Images of the artist’s previous works including notation of current location.

We encourage sending a small model of each sketch. These models shall remain the property of the Municipality, whether the sculpture is selected for participation or not.
3. Each sketch must be accompanied by a title of the work and a short description of the underlying concept of the work. Sketches lacking the required accompaniments shall not be discussed by the selection committee.
Application must note the dimensions (height, width and perimeter) for each proposed sculpture. Applications shall further note details of materials to be incorporated with the stone, including type of material and required quantity, etc.
4. Participants shall also design the base for their work and therefore shall also submit a sketch for their proposed pedestal. Bases shall be executed by the artists during the Symposium.
5. Applicants shall note the country and nationality which he or she is representing.
6. Application Form is herein attached as Appendix A.
7. Applicants should take into consideration that participating sculptures shall be placed in public parks, children’s day care centers and/or other public spaces and therefore, should be accessible by and safe for children.
III. Tools and Assistants
1. Sculptures shall come equipped with several units of diamond discs (suitable for V220) including spare parts, suitable for work in hard granite, a small pneumatic hammer and personal sculpting tools as each participant sees fit and according to his or her needs..
2. The Municipality shall provide connections to electricity, air and water. Periodically, participating sculptors shall have the use of a crane to transfer rocks.
The Symposium Administration may, yet is not obligated, to assign to students from Western Galilee colleges as personal assistant to selected sculptors.
Participating sculptors are not permitted to be accompanied by their own personal assistants.
IV. Selection of Participating Sculptors and Winners
1. The Artistic Judging Committee shall select the sketches worthy of participation and accordingly select the sculptures to participate in the Fifteen Annual “Stone in the Galilee” Sculpture Symposium.
Committee decisions are final.
V. Liability and Insurance
1. Sculptors undertake to execute a sculpture on the basis of the submitted sketch selected by the Artistic Judging Committee.
Any sculpture failing to comply with the aforementioned undertaking, forfeits his or her entitlement to reimbursement of his or her expenses by the Municipality. The Municipality is entitled to terminate the work and participation of any sculptor deviating from the aforesaid undertaking.
2. The sculptor undertakes to have issued the following insurance policies at his or her expense, to be in effect concurrently with the effect of this agreement:
a) Personal health insurance and personal accident insurance for the participating sculptor;
b) Personal property / equipment insurance.
* terms and conditions of the policies shall conform to those set forth in Appendix B.
VI. Ownership of Sculptures
1. The sculptures executed by the participating sculptors in the Symposium shall remain the exclusive property of the Municipality and the Municipality shall be entitled to transfer said sculptures to any third party, by any means as it deems fit, temporarily or for perpetuity.
2. The Municipality shall ensure that the sculpture are placed in an appropriate location, either in or outside the city, and shall attach to each sculpture so installed a sign bearing the name of sculptor.
In the event that a sculpture executed by a sculptor constitutes a safety hazard, despite its approval by the Artistic Judging Committee, the Municipality shall have no obligation to place the said sculpture as set forth in this paragraph.
VII. Reimbursement of Expenses and Lodging
1. Lodging and food expenses of the participating sculpture in Maalot-Tarshiha, during the entire Symposium, shall be born by the Municipality, based on an accommodation program planned by the Municipality.
All expenses beyond the aforementioned, such as extension of stay, telephone calls, special transportation expenses, etc., shall be born by the sculptor.
The Municipality shall share a portion of the sculptor’s transportation costs, according to the following schedule:
For a participating sculpture of an Israeli sculptor: USD 1000
For a participating sculpture of a sculpture from abroad: USD 1500
One half of the above amount shall be transferred to each participating sculpture approximately 10 days after his or her arrival in Maalot-
Tarshiha. The balance of the aforementioned amount shall be transferred at the closure of the Symposium.
2. Participation of any assistant and/or spouse and/or partner other than the participation of the sculptor, is prohibited, even if the participating sculptor undertakes to bear all the accompanying party’s expenses.
VIII. Submission and Dates of Application
1. Applications including sketches and all required documents and information, pursuant to the above terms and conditions, should be sent by mail to the following address:

2. The conditions and terms herein should not be deemed as solicitation to participate in the Sculpture Symposium. Notification of the decisions of the Artistic Judging Committee shall be made in writing to selected sculptors.

3. Several (3) proposed sketches for sculpting in the spirit of the Sculpture Symposium's theme for the year 2007- "From the World of Children's Fairytales", including a small model.
Each one of the sketches must carry a name.
The sketches will include a design of the sculpture's basis.
I have / has not enclosed a model of the proposed sculpture.
Each sketch includes the title of the work and a short description of its underlying concept.
Sketches include design of the pedestal.
B. I hereby am willing to represent _____________________ (country name) at the Symposium.
C. I hereby undertake, during the Thirteenth Annual “Stone in the Galilee” Sculpture Symposium, to be held in Maalot-Tarhisha in April 2007, to execute only the sculpture selected by the Artistic Judging Committee based on the submitted sketch.
I hereby confirm and agree that, to the extent that I deviate from the aforementioned undertaking, the Symposium Administration may disqualify my sculpture and terminate my participation in the Symposium.
I also am aware and agree that, in this case, I shall have no right to receive any reimbursement of my expenses, as set forth in the Terms and Conditions of Participation, nor shall I have any claim or demand to receive a share in my expenses.
A copy of the sketch selected by the Artistic Judging Committee shall constitute an integral part of my undertaking herein.
D. I hereby undertake to appear and participate in the Sculpture Symposium, to the extent that my proposed sculpture is selected by the Artistic Judging Committee.
I shall be entitled to inform the Municipality of my non-participation no later than March 10, 2007. In the event of any notification of non-participation subsequent to the said date, and/or non-participation in the Symposium in the absence of such notification, I shall be liable to pay liquidated damages in the amount of USD 1000 (one thousand dollars US) to the Municipality.
E. I hereby accept all the terms and conditions set forth in the letter, signed by the Municipality, as an invitation to submit proposals.
F. My undertakings herein shall be in effect only on the condition that one of the sketches I submit herein is selected for participation by the Artistic Judging Committee.

Appendix B
Insurance Appendix
Insurance policies issued pursuant to requirements set forth in paragraph E 1 of the letter, shall include the following terms and conditions:
1. Waiver of the insurer’s right of recourse or subrogation vis a vis the Municipality.
2. Policy shall include a clause which provides that the cancellation of the insurance policy, either by the sculptor’s request or the desire of the insured, shall be executed by advance notification to be additionally delivered to the Municipality’s representative no less than 60 days prior to the requested date of cancellation.
3. To secure the sculptor’s undertakings to issue the aforementioned insurance coverage, the sculptor undertakes to deliver to the Municipality representative, within ten days from receiving notification of his or her participation in the Symposium, a certificate of insurance signed by the insurance company. The formula of the said certificate appears in Appendix C.

At the request of ___________________, ID/Company no. ____________________ (hereafter, “the Sculptor”), we have issued insurance policies relating to the Sculptor’s participation in the aforementioned Symposium.
We hereby confirm that we have reviewed the terms and conditions of participation and issued the insurance policies as stated therein at the conditions stated therein.
We are aware that our declaration constitutes a basis for the agreement between the Maalot-Tarhisha Municipality and the Sculptor and therefore is irrevocable, other than by advance notification as set forth in the said agreement.
The terms and conditions of contracting between the Municipality and the Sculptor constitute an integral part of this certificate of insurance and shall be interpreted as part thereof.
